Economic Analysis of Automatic Identification Technologies for
Tinker Air Force Base: The Methodological Approach
Introduction
The objective of this research is to provide a fairly accurate economic analysis of specific
automatic identification technologies (AIT) suitable for the Tinker Air Force base. Tinker is
required to comply with the mandate given by the Department of Defense (DoD). There are a
wide variety of possible AITs under consideration. Several documents outline the various
benefits and shortcomings associated with unique identification technologies. Some of these
benefits may directly impact processes within Tinker resulting in savings once the technology is
implemented (hard savings) whereas other benefits may indirectly impact Tinker’s processes
(soft savings). In any case the benefits that Tinker will likely incur and to what extent these
benefits will impact Tinker’s processes are the basis for the determination of the value of these
AITs.
As mentioned previously, there are a number of technologies currently available that can
uniquely identify parts, assemblies, and assets. Listed below are the technologies that will be
considered in this analysis and how it may be applied:
Active Radio-Frequency Identification (Active RFID): An active RFID tag is placed
directly on the asset when the asset is uniquely identified
Passive Radio-Frequency Identification (Passive RFID): A passive RFID tag is placed
directly on the asset when the asset is uniquely identified
Two-Dimensional Barcodes (2D Barcodes): A 2D barcode is placed directly on the asset
as well as the box when the asset is uniquely identified
