Below the Benefits/Disadvantages and % Difference information is Mean Time Between
Failures, Years, and Items. Mean Time between Failures refers to the time lapse beginning with
the time the item was sent to the customer and ending with the time same item was returned to
the depot because it was defective. This data is not used until the economic analysis on the last
sheet. These items have been separated into the following three categories:
• Type 1 Items: These items are assumed to be defective after 5 years and make up
approximately 30% of all defective returns.
• Type 2 Items: These items are assumed to be defective after 7 years and make up
approximately 50% of all defective returns.
• Type 3 Items: These items are assumed to be defective after 10 years and make up
approximately 20% of all defective returns.
The next group of information is the labor type and the associated wages per hour. Beneath the
Laborer column is a list of the labor positions likely involved in product operations. Operators
are highlighted in a light shade of green and have a pay rate of $19.23/hr. Supervisors are
