to the benefits and disadvantages of the technology. It may be the case that the
technology cannot be implemented at a candidate touch point due to the limitations of the
technology. And finally, the last question requires the consideration of the possible
financial implications of implementing the technology at various points. Some touch
points may require greater costs than others in the area of implementation, yet provide
equal benefits and advantages as other touch points.
4) Time Studies: Time studies need to be conducted to determine how much time is needed
to identify products at these touch points. The objective is to determine how much time
can be saved as a result of using AITs. Time savings are calculated by comparing the
current time required for a task with the hypothetical time required for a task once the
technology is implemented. Ideally, the time required for a task with the technology
should be captured through time studies as well. This can be done using a pilot study or
possibly calling the supplier of the technology for accurate times for the task in question.
The goal is to have an accurate time representation of the task when using the new
technology. If times are not available through the supplier and conducting a pilot study is
outside the bounds of the project expense, then refer to research. Case studies may
provide information for how much time can be saved by performing a particular task.
5) AIT Implementation Costs: This requires research to determine the costs of the AITs as
well as estimated implementation costs for the various options. Also, how the technology
is being inserted and used can play a significant role here. For example, if an AIT option
requires both 2D barcodes and RFID, then the costs for both systems should be included
in the implementation costs. Costs to consider for the implementation costs are quantity,
